Just like in the spring - with the COVID-19 pandemic making large gatherings unsafe - the traditional ceremony with family and friends was cancelled in favour of a small, short celebration, with only university president Hideo Ohno, selected faculty members and eight student representatives in attendance. In his speech, President Ohno congratulated the 447 students who are graduating this semester. "Although the COVID-19 pandemic created serious and complicated conditions, all of you were able to overcome the difficulties and complete your studies, which in and of itself is a remarkable accomplishment," he said. "During your time here at Tohoku University, you have obtained not only a more fundamental understanding of the world, but also the means to distill information and knowledge from given data, expand your intellectual horizon and provide wisdom and a voice of reason to others." President Ohno also encouraged all students to stay in touch with their professors and each other, through the university's global alumni network. Lu Jiaqi, speaking on behalf of the students, thanked the university and all his professors for their support over the years. "This past year was hard, but even during the coronavirus crisis, the university did everything to protect the students. We couldn't go to school but we could still have lab discussions, and could continue our studies online," he said. "I'm so grateful for the support." The other students echoed his sentiment. "Tohoku University was everything to me for the last five years. I really enjoyed the scenery on campus, my friends in the lab and the student life here," said Diana Mindaleva. "I'm so happy that I had the chance to study and live in Japan," said Zong Peiwen. "Tohoku University has a really nice environment for international students and I was able to make many friends from all over the world." Ganbold Erchissaran, who will soon return to Mongolia, said that this was both a happy and sad day. "I will miss coming to Katahira campus. I will miss the food, I will miss time with my friends and even the lectures. I want to say thank you so much for the experience." Graduates who were not at the ceremony were able to watch a live broadcast from home. Many also spent the day saying their goodbyes to friends and professors. The Public Relations Department joins the president and the entire Tohoku University family in saying congratulations to all the graduating students, and good luck on their new adventures. link in Japanese Contact: Tohoku University International PR Section Tel: +81-22-217-4816 Fax: +81-22-217-4818 Email: public_relationsgrp.tohoku.ac.jp Category University News Research Arts & Culture Health & Sports Campus & Community International Visits Alumni Careers COVID-19 Archives 2014年 2015年 2016年 2017年 2018年 2019年 2020年 2021年 2022年 2023年 2024年 Recent News 2024-04-10 University News Tohoku University's New President Meets the Media 2024-04-10 Careers Recruitment Notice: Associate Professor 2024-04-03 University News Tohoku University Entrance Ceremony, Spring 2024 2024-04-02 Careers Recruitment Notice: Assistant Professor 2024-04-01 University News In Conversation with Hideo Ohno Archives Page Top About Tohoku University Academics Admissions Research Campus Life News Events International Affairs Students Alumni Promotional Videos Subscribe to our Newsletter Map & Directions Contact Tohoku University Jobs & Vacancies Emergency Information Site Map Privacy Policy Media Enquiries Parent & Family Support Public Facilities Contact Tohoku University
